A couple of weeks ago we wrote about the 4 What's of Ikigai and how they transform into the Westernized Ikigai. Today we'll explain the original, Traditional Japanese Ikigai and how the Western world brought it into the business and work life.

The 4 What's are traditionally:

1. What you Love (Passion/Mission)
2. What you are Good At (Passion/Profession)
3. What you can be Paid For (Profession/Vocation)
4. What the World Needs (Mission/Vocation).

As you can see it doesn't have to be a business/career/profession it can be a calling/offering/volunteerism. Westernized Ikigai focuses on business/career/profession. In the Japanese culture villages and community members live their Ikigai as a necessity to the existence and function of the village/community.

It is also fulfilling to the community when everyone is walking in their bliss. Bliss and joy create longer healthier lives. Hence, scholars have spoken that the gift of longer life in Japanese cultures has a direct correlation to Ikigai.
